Latest handphone gadget(s) in town? What's your take?
Have you ever thought of trying to get the latest handphone gadget in town?
Think twice before making the final decision...
Let's take a simple example as a scenario;
Motorola Razr V3. [S$168.00(2 year)]
This phone has the following features:-
-Bluetooth
-Integrated VGA camera
-MPEG4 video playback
etc.
Nokia N80. [S$738.00(2 year)]
This phone has the following features:-
-3 Megapixel CMOS camera
-Integrated Wireless Lan 802.11g
-Memory expension via Mini SD card
-Series 60 Symbian OS
-FM Stereo Radio/Visual Radio
-Music player
-Image and Video editor
-Infrared
-Bluetooth
etc.
From the 2 phone models which I have mentioned above, if you are aware of it, Nokia N80 is a 3G phone, while Motorola Razr V3 is just a normal 2G phone.
Take a look at the specifications of both the phones, some of you might feel that the N80 will be a good catch. This is so as it is one of the latest phone model in town and that it might be more stylish to get that phone. In this way, you will not be out of trend (and that you will not lose face in front of your friends who were also using such good phones).
But, think again. Is "face" really such an important factor? Do you really have to follow your friends and get some expensive gadgets and bring them around wherever you go? What if one day you meet a pickpocket/thief on the street? And...that's the end of your handphone, huh?
Youngsters these days... I wonder if their parents were the root cause of this problem or was it that it is the society that has been changing?
Another point which I would want to bring to your attention is, not just youngsters, but adults also tend to go for the latest trend. It's not because they get their phone for they wanted to use a particular function, but, once again, they get it because of the trend!! Well, take a look around you, how many of them are really making full use of all the functions on those expensive phones?
And for heaven's sake, handphone is just another equipment used for contacting people, communication. What you really need is just the phone call function, or the SMS function. Am I right to say so?
Even with a phone that has got an integrated camera which comes with it, how often do you actually use that camera? Well, I know, some people get a camera phone because of convinence, so they don't have to bring an extra camera around with them wherever they go. However, is the resolution of the integrated camera good enough as compared to a "real" digital camera? Some people get a phone with music player integrated on the handphone because they do not want to bring an extra MP3 player around with them. But isn't the memory on the phone enough for a few songs only? Why not just invest in a good Creative MP3 player and carry it on the go? Because if you were to use your music player on your phone, say for about 1.5 hours, how low will have your battery on your phone gone? What if someone suddenly decides to call you, or what if that was an urgent call?
Cost of the phone is just another factor to consider. Having to spend about 800 to 1000 bucks on one good phone with all the fanciful functions on it? Or wouldn't it be better this way by spending about 200 to 300 bucks on one normal phone, invest 400 bucks on a 5 Megapixel camera, and invest another 200 bucks on a 1GB MP3 player? So at least, when your handphone decides to give way one fine day, you will still have your camera and MP3 player with you. Don't you agree with me?
Well, these days, I seriously do not know how people think at all. I just thought that getting a normal phone was much more than enough. I just wonder how the older generations actually survived when they do not have such thing known as handphone in the past. Haha...

P.S. Hey people, no offence alright, I just want to post something different on my blog by sharing with you people how I feel about certain things in life. Comments are very much welcomed too! (But please, do not use a gun and point it on my head. This is my territory after all... Haha!) ^_^

there are lots of product out in the market which are overloaded with features, mainly to attract comsumers and to outlast competitors so as to survive in the market.
you have successfully identified the mobile phone as one of them. digital camera is another overkilled product too! do you think a normal user needs 8-Megapixel? 10-Megapixel worth of resolution? we call these extra features that do not belong to the basic core function - frills.
on the same line, if medical products can strip themselves out of these frills, it may better serve mankind. eg, a kidney dialysis machine without frills: will it be cheaper, easier to use, yet serving the same basic needed functions? =p

The phones with MP3 player do have quite a lot of memory these days, like my mum's Samsung E730, 90MB of built-in memory. And yes, some other phones model do accept Mini-SD cards or any other memory cards too. But, like I said, is the battery able to last you through, at least, for one day...if you happen to keep listening to the MP3s in your handphone?
And it is not that I wanted to compare, but it is just that, if these young people are like that now, what will happen to our next generation?
Well...just something to think through... ;)

alien is right, it is mainly to attract consumers blar blar blar...
But still... I don't think that the consumers really have the 'NEED' to own one of those gadgets. Like the example alien said, a 8 Magapixel or 10 Megapixel camera... Only professionals will use those really good cameras as they really need the good quality photos and things like that.
And yea, our technology these days, we should have spend the money and used it on other equiptments instead, other than just on our daily-lives gadgets... =)

well... it is up to us to teach our next generation... china kept its moral teaching 儒家思想 for the past 5000 years... but then recently they decide to phase it out becos they think it is outdated...
Moral and ethics form the base of human society... remove it.. and look what happens now... we always look up to western countries becos they are more developed.. and we always try to be like them... We phase out moral studies becos we believe that the time is better spent on improving our daily lives by creating more high-tech gadgets.. like westerners...
Then there is this being "democratic" stuff... where children can take guns and shoot at whoever they dislike... becos there is no moral studies... no need for respect of elders...everyone around us is only friends and enemies... make friends.. kill enemies.. with what?.. high tech gadgets tat we invented.. guns.. bombs...
things that are happening around us are just the side effects... like the focus on overkill products... frills so to speak... high tech gadgets...
To fix this problem.. we must start teaching our younger generation at least some moral principles... build up a strong foundation... before things get worse.. but then again... how many ppl out there really care... democracy is the way to go nowadays... is just too bad that humans are not "mature" enough to implement democracy...
